“Yeti, or not, Here They Come!”

My Take:

Smallfoot turns the Bigfoot legend upside down when a bright young Yeti (Channing Tatum) finds something he thought didn’t exist—a human! News of the “smallfoot,” Percy (James Corden), throws the simple Yeti community into an uproar over what else might be out there in the big world beyond their snowy village.

I am a fan of animated films and always look forward to the chance to review one that I haven’t seen. Smallfoot is a cute, family film that features a solid cast, musically spun/contemporary themes, and an elementary plot aimed at younger viewers. Its characters aren’t black hole deep but each is likeable along with their star voiced counterparts as they contribute their share of value to the storyline and film as a whole. There are a few laughs and, charming moments but, there is nothing here that we haven’t seen before. The script and direction cover the bases necessary to make for a well-rounded and, entertaining animated film that you can sit and enjoy with your kids.

Smallfoot comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound.

This is a high-quality video presentation that boasts inviting colors that are rich in saturation and bold in depth. Detail is superlative as the video has excellent dimensionality with crisp texture and fine articulation. Contrast is strong and well balanced so that whites are crisp without distortion or loss of detail. Blacks are deep with excellent dynamic and enriching gradational highlights. This is a beautiful and pristine quality digital transfer that sparkles on Blu-ray.

The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack makes excellent use of the entire surround platform and offers detail rich sonic clarity, crystalline dialog and solid dynamics. This mix doesn’t bombard you with constantly aggressive surround sound. It applies it when appropriate and combines discretely placed directional cues with rear channel ambience that fills the listening area nicely. The front and rear sound field work in unison to render the soundtrack with precise imaging and acoustic presence that elevates the experience. The LFE channel is actively engaged throughout and offers bass response that is punchy and on occasion, room shaking.

Bonus Features:

  • • Yeti Set Go Sing-Along – Sing-Along, fun facts and much more!
    • “Super Soozie” Mini Movie – Custom animation featuring the yeti toddler, Soozie.

Final Thoughts:

Smallfoot ] is light, fun, family entertainment, that turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It arrives on Blu-ray in this Combo Pack from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring top notch high definition video, excellent lossless surround sound and, a fan friendly assortment of extras that includes sing-along version of the film. Smallfoot isn’t destined to be the next animated family classic but, it’s a great way to spend the evening with the kids on movie night. Toss it in your rental queue and give it a spin on Blu-ray.
