Help an old woman

Robman, if you're around, I think you've helped before....still running 5 Replays thru wired (not wifi) XE104's, Netgear router N041 and Surfboard 6121 which Comcast is now telling me I have to upgrade for higher speed...oh and all that runs through an Ooma phone line. Any suggestions?

I don't think your router will make a difference, but your IP range may change and you may need to update static IPs. Are you saying your cablebox will change too? Maybe that's why you're asking the Robman for help.. (IR codes)

I'm sure you're not using dialup through Ooma, there aren't any dialup numbers any more.

No they are not saying the cablebox will change, just that I need a new modem....one of the ones they listed is Netgear CM600...and no it's not dialup thru Ooma. At this point though I am hopelessly lost as to why I need a different modem except that Comcast says so! Any help I can get will be good.

Ask Comcast why specifically they want you to upgrade modems (I cant figure out why they would say you need to upgrade) as you current gear should be more then adequate.

I doubt any customer service person would be able to understand, much less explain why she needs a new modem.

Do you use WiRNS or LaHo?

Do you know if you have any static IP addresses (if you use WiRNS, probably)

If you use WiRNS, did you set it up or did someone else? Are they available?

Robert

Are you getting faster internet?

I have that same model of modem, and get 50Mbps downstream. Apparently, this modem cannot handle downstream speeds above about 172Mbps. A more capable modem is desirable to the cable company even if your speed is less than that. The company here requires a better modem for new users.

They recommend faster Surfboard models.

Thank you all.....yes, I use WIRNS and it works fine. Can you give me some examples of faster Surfboard models? One I saw listed thru Amazon was Netgear CM 600 or Netgear CM 700

SB6141 8 DS channels (twice the speed of what you have)

SB6183 16 DS channels (four times the speed)

SB6190 32 DS channels (eight times the speed)

SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 (should work on 1Gbps service)

Thank you SO much for helping...out of the four you listed the only one it took me to on Amazon was the 6183. So, and I know this is a stretch, do you think I should go ahead and order it? i think it's about $94. I will await your response before I do anything.

I saw it for $69 on Amazon today (the 6190 is $94.99). I think this would be a good modem for you. You might want to check with your cable company first, to make sure this is acceptable.

As reminder, that's 5 Replays located in different rooms, using WIRNS and XE104's along with the Ooma phone.

It would have helped to say what it is rather than just give a model number, but I looked that up and it appears to be a combination ethernet switch and powerline adapter. What modem you're using should have nothing to do with this, although these will limit your speed (which probably makes no difference with the Replays).

As far as I can tell, the Ooma device is what's connected directly to your modem. I didn't find anything on what modem you can use, so expect it to work with anything.

OK I ordered the SB6183 from Amazon. You would probably rather NOT hear from me again....but I sincerely thank you for helping.

Probably you did not want to hear from me again, but here I go....I already received the 6183 and plugged it in but nothing worked. I have a sneaking suspicion that it could be because of the Ooma hookup. Everything lights up as you would expect but I lose the phone. Any thoughts?

If you are replacing a cable modem you need to have the cable company add it to your account or for a lack of words "provision" it.

That would be step one, the newer modems have more channels that provide increased bandwidth plus the newer DOCSIS 3.0.

Step two normally would be to connect your home router into the ethernet port of the cable modem unless your setup is like this?

Modem > Ooma > router which I see some of Ooma models support

Typical setup should be

Modem > Router > Ooma (plugged into one of the ethernet ports)

Router > provides home wireless (SSID)
Router > 4 ethernet ports for direct connected devices like the Ooma

Hope that helps?

Sorry, I don't know how to make some of those symbols you used but you said the following:

"Typical setup should be

Modem > Router > Ooma (plugged into one of the ethernet ports)

Router > provides home wireless (SSID)
Router > 4 ethernet ports for direct connected devices like the Ooma
ooma to router OR modem to router to 4 ethernet ports for direct"

To remind you, I have 5 functioning Replays connected to WIRNS....I just recently changed their addresses from 107 to 112 and they are all working fine so I do not want to screw them up...this was all because my "other" PC is not really working very well.

I have the new Surfboard 6183 at "the ready" as soon as I hear back from you. Oh, and everything is wired and not wireless. Thank you.

If the Replays are connected through the router, changing the modem wouldn't affect the local addresses it provides.

When you say 112, do you mean something like 192.168.112.10 or 192.168.1.112? IP addresses beginning with 192.168 are local addresses from the router (or possibly Ooma) and aren't affected by changing the modem. "wired or wireless" also has nothing to do with the modem.

Exactly, what you said 192.168.1.112...so I guess I should go ahead then and try to hook up the new modem.

Sorry it's been a long time and I do not know if anyone can help...but we have now moved to a different zip code (WAS in 60171 and am now in 60172)...Comcast has been here many times and I no longer see any future for the Replays/ used to be all set up with my XE104's and Schedules Direct....all Replays WERE 192.168.1.and 101 thru 105. NOW the comcast idiots can only tell you that the default gateway MUST BE 10.0.0.1. DNS shows up as 75.75.75.75.75.76.76. I have tried using MANY different combinations and I cannot get anything to work. If ANYONE has any ideas, I'd be delighted to hear them. BTW the last comcast dude commented that he doubted that the Replays could record! Thanks for any help!
