Samsung NU7100 4K tv looks awful w/ DirecTV

My parents bought this new Samsung NU7100 tv for there cabin and while streaming a movie the picture was great but when they went to watch direct tv the picture was terrible. Hard to read words/blurry picture. The Direct tv box uses a coax cable to connect to tv. It’s an older box so it doesn’t have HDMI output. They’re not looking to try and get 4K picture quality they would be fine with 720/1080. They just got this tv yesterday so they can still return it if need or is there anything else they can do in the settings. Thanks

If the D* box doesn't have at least component (red/green/blue) outputs, they must upgrade the D* box. Can't get 720/1080 via coax, composite or S-video which is 480i only.

You're sending standard definition video to a high-definition television set. Worse, the video's being modulated over the coax output. It's like listening to AM radio run through an Onkyo. It ain't gonna get any better no matter what TV they buy.

You can improve the picture a little bit by using the video and audio RCA connectors in the back of the DirecTV box assuming your new TV has ports for those. Still standard definition, but a little crisper.

Would help to know the model number of the DirecTV receiver.

Best is to just call DirecTV and swap out for high definition equipment.

(oops.. SIMULPOST!)

Thread title edited to make more specific.

Where my father lives, his complex offered Direct TV in SD. He bought a new 4k TV and found out that he could pay extra and get an HD box. He really notices the difference.
