Gain randomly changing. Dual ep4000. Y split.

I have two FTW-21's powered off of a bridged ep4000 each. They see the full amp power at 4 ohms but I never really push them.
Splitting the LFE out of an older Pioneer VSX-1018, with a Y cable, and two RCA > XLR adapters on each side.

The problem is, randomly when adjusting gain, or turning only one subwoofer on (don't always need both), the levels are all wrong.
Once it starts working and gets readjusted, it's fine, but messing with the gain knobs, causes one subwoofer to be much louder, or one to be quieter, even with both are split with the same cables and at the same levels. Occasionally it's even worse, like the sub won't come on at all, or is clipping, or extremely quiet. Makes be a bit scared to turn them up really loud for fear of the gain changing..

Think this a cable problem? Receiver? Amps?
I have a Samson S-convert but I stopped using it as I was getting enough output out of my LFE without.
Maybe I should switch back to properly convert between unbalanced and balance?

Thoughts?
Thanks.

It sounds like the gain potentiometer on the amp is going bad or needs cleaned/replaced. You could try some electronic cleaner on/in it.

However, in most setups, you should set the amp gain to max and adjust the gain elsewhere in the signal chain.
